John Carnochan, Detective Chief Superintendent and Head of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit will give the keynote address at this year's Law Awards of Scotland.
John's experience with the Violence Reduction Unit will prove to be both interesting and thought provoking. Giving guests an insight into his work and how this effects the legal industry.
John's Biography
John is a Detective Chief Superintendent with Strathclyde Police, a force of over 10,000 officers and staff covering central Scotland including the city of Glasgow. He has been a police officer for over 36 years, working mostly as a Detective. He has been involved in various roles in the investigation of serious crime and in particular as senior investigating officer in murder inquiries. He was, until 2004, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Department (Operations) with direct responsibility for the force Serious Crime Squad and Fraud Squad. He was a Licensed Hostage Negotiator and was responsible within the force for all matters relating to abduction.
In 1997 he spent time as a police advisor to the Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the West Indies.
Together with Karyn McCluskey, John established the Violence Reduction Unit in January 2005 with the aim of developing a strategy that would bring about sustainable reductions in violence within Strathclyde. In April 2006 the VRU assumed a Scotland wide role and are now supported by the Scottish Government. Their fundamental tenet is that “violence is preventable - not inevitable”.
He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in 2007.

He is a regular lecturer at the Scottish Police College and presents on the work of the VRU at conferences, seminars and universities throughout the UK. He acts as a technical adviser for the World Health Organisation, Violence Prevention Alliance and is currently working with the University of St Andrews in assisting 4 low and middle income countries develop violence reduction strategies.
